Welcome! To the world of tomorrow!
It's kind of like the world of today, but everyone dresses like Slick from the WWE.
It what may be the most convoluted plot since sending back a machine to kill a woman before she gets pregnant to stop an uprising, future humans travel back in time to stop Japan from becoming the world's strongest economic power.
We are not sure why the Futurians care this much, if Japan is engaged in dastardly dealings as a power. But they come up with the most convoluted plot I've seen in a Godzilla movie.
The Futurians travel back in time to 1990's Japan, to take 3 people from the 90's back to 1944. Once there they will remove the dinosaur who becomes Godzilla before the bomb hits and mutates him. Secretly the Futurians are planning on leaving their own dinosaurs on the island who will merge and become King Ghidora.
BUT! The dinosaur they moved is hit by radiation from a Russian sub, which is from the plot in Godzilla 1985, proving predeterminism.
Early in the film they use quite a few jump cuts, which prove to be quite jarring. It's used to introduce a few characters and establish pacing.
The cuts in the newsroom don't really make sense. They're having a conversation while walking, we cut to the map in the middle of a sentence, and then go to them sitting down talking. There's not break in the conversation, even though it's obvious there is at least 5 minutes of movement involved but only 1 minute of dialogue matched up. They had to find the place to sit, find the map, he had to light the cigarette. The sequence is disappointing cause they're close to having a smooth transitional bit through editing. And it's rare Godzilla movies take chances like this.
The picture above, one of the best shots of Godzilla I've seen in so far as showing his size. In the foreground is a real farm with cows milling around. In the background we have trees, possibly a forest. And finally in the middle we have Godzilla. This is a perfect shot displaying both his size and comportment. Godzilla is uninterested in the cows, even though they'd seem to be tasty snack for him. He could pick up a hand full and chomp on them as he strolls through he country side like they were gummy bears.
I loved the 90's Godzilla run after Biolante and this is the best of the bunch. Highly recommended.
