The Unborn - 2009

Directed and written by David S. Goyer. Cinematography by James Hawkinson.
I don't know how this movie slipped under my radar. It has Idris Elba and Gary Oldman in it. How was there not more advertising put behind 'The Unborn'? Those two stars could not have come cheap.
Goyer wrote both 'Man of Steel' and 'BVS:DOJ'. I think his world vision is suited more for Horror, as demonstrated in 'The Unborn'.  The look of the film is fantastic with Goyer displaying a horror hound eye for imagery. The sets all have a fuliginous look to them.

The shot above takes place during the exorcism as they try to remove the dybbuk from Casey. They don't for a circle around her, more of two parentheses. Below we have the old man crawling around like a spider with his head turned the side, his gaping mouth also turned sidways:

And then we have this monster below, pay attention to the chest:

A gruesome image to be sure. But that hole kinda reminds me of something. There definitely seems to be a theme when it comes to the imagery Goyer is using. What could it be that we are supposed to fear? Oh and here's a shot of a slit in the wall where all these bugs emanate from:

I just find it odd, the source of everyone terror seems to come from a similar shape. I can't quite put my finger on it though...
Anyway, with all the monsters and demons and exorcism, by far the most unrealistic part of the movie was when a teenager needs to get information, and her first instinct is to go to a library. You're letting your age show there Goyer.
Recommended. There are 4 or 5 really great scares in 'The Unborn' and I can't stress how creepy the imagery was. Though the demon Spuds Mackenzie was too funny. You gotta pick a more menacing dog there.
