Headhunters - 2011

Directed by Morten Tyldum. Headhunters is a Norwegian action/thriller movie in the vein of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The script has plenty of twists and turns that lead to satisfying finale. Let's look at how the power structure between Roger and Clas is set up through framing:

Roger (left)  Clas (right)

This is a classic symmetrical shot during the squash scene. You can see both men on the opposite sides of each other despite "working together" at this point in the film. Notice how the lighting actually cuts Roger off at the head. He's also shorter and more slumped down than Clas. Clas's outfit emphasizes his height; his shorts are higher up elongating his legs, his socks can be seen in frame where Roger's are not. Clas is in control since Roger does not know his true intentions. Roger is losing in squash and in life.

Now lets look at the first time they meet each other:

Both Clas and Diana (Roger's wife) are looking down at Roger. We don't know Clas and Diana's relationship, but they are both playing Roger for a fool at this point. Roger's appearance, his hair, clothes, and height emphasize how out of place he is in this world. Remember he steals art to maintain a lifestyle he can't afford. He is an unnatural fraud whereas Clas and Diana are in their element.

Now a look at some shots later in the film:

Clas

Roger

This takes place during the climax, when Roger finally has the upper hand. You notice in these medium shots he's framed up equally with Clas. This is after he's confronted his wife and they've had a break through in their relationship. His obsession with being someone he's not laid bare before her. Now he's stripped of his suits and his hair. This is the first time in the film he's become a complete person, at the very least the first time he's an honest person.

Highly Recommended.
